Rafsanjani "I belong to the Islamic Revolution until I die"

Iran Daily: "Rafsanjanis Nomination Hangs in Balance

TEHRAN, Jan. 5--State Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Wednesday said he is still not convinced about participating in the presidential election.
"I hope that there will be no need for my presence on the executive scene. However, if my presence is needed I belong to the Islamic Revolution until I die," he told reporters.
According to ISNA, Rafsanjani went on to add, "Not only should the people and elite want me to nominate myself for presidency, I should also myself be convinced to run. While there are other personalities, there is no need for old personalities to run. At any rate, I am not yet convinced."
Asked when he would announce his final decision regarding running for the presidency, he said, "I will not set this deadline, others have set it."
Rafsanjani also said that it was a sin and an ugly move to defame personalities.
"Nobody should slander other people. Those who are competent should nominate themselves so that the people would choose one person," he said.
Questioned about his evaluation of those who have become candidates so far, he declined to give an explicit response.
"This is a political question," he said."
