Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani: Tehran-Riyadh ties as a sign of very positive and effective development

Colonialists attempting to create discord to achieve their goals: Rafsanjani: "Colonialists attempting to create discord to achieve their goals: Rafsanjani

TEHRAN, Jan. 11 (MNA) -- Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani discussed both regional and international issues as well as bilateral ties between Islamic countries with the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Iran and Saudi Arabian media officials on Monday.
Referring to nuclear issues and the U.S. policy of exaggerating about the extent of terrorism in regional states, Rafsanjani said that creating discord and conflict among countries “as a means to achieve their goals” is the strategy of the colonialists.

He pointed to Tehran-Riyadh ties as a sign of very positive and effective development, expressing hope that the two countries would overcome various challenges in the region and the Islamic world through further cooperation.

The EC chairman said that Iran and Saudi Arabia had previously made a great accomplishment in resolving the regional crisis regarding oil prices, adding that Muslim countries in the Middle East should strive to develop their ties in view of the sensitive conditions in both the region and the Islamic world.

He also called for an exchange of information between the two countries’ media as a means to strengthen Iran-Saudi Arabia ties.

Referring to the period of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, during which the former Iraqi Baath regime used various chemical weapons against Iran, Rafsanjani stressed that the Islamic Republic has proven to the world that it will never make use of such weapons.

He noted that the enemies of the Islamic world made various efforts after the Islamic Revolution in Iran to brand the Muslims’ enmity toward the Zionist regime as an enmity between Arab and non-Arab populations.

“But all those efforts, including the Iran-Iraq war itself, were in vain,” he added.

Rafsanjani went on to say that the recent claims made by the enemies, accusing Iran of trying to form a Shia crescent in the region, were designed to create discord in the Middle East.

In conclusion, he observed that while Iran is baselessly accused of interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, the occupiers are meddling in all political, social, and economic aspects of Iraqi society."
